How To Draw People It's Easier Than You Think |

| People say that remarkable sketch artists perceive in a
different way. Really? Well sort of. Here is the stuff that
I think is occurring. They have un-learned the sketch
competencies they had as a kid. For example I lay a wager
that when you sit and draw a face its kind of the same face
you drew when you were a child. The eyes don´t in reality
look like that do they? The reason is that when we learned
as a child we learned symbols. Our brain is encouraged to
categorise and learn letters, numbers and shapes. So, if I
asked you now to draw a capital letter 'A' you can visualize
it now on the page. You know how to draw it, you know the
shape. Concentrate and you can really feel the muscle
memory.. you can use an imaginary pencil can´t you? Yep.
It´s programmed in. Well that is ok if you are drawing
letters but faces aren´t the identical. No two eyes aren´t
the same shape….ever! If you visualize drawing an eye right
now, you instinctively know where you´re going to begin
don´t you? But that´s before you´ve even looked atseen the
subject! Ever heard of the Right Brain Left Brain theory? This hypothesis suggests that the two dissimilar sides of the brain control two different 'modes' of thinking. It also suggests that each of us prefers one mode over the other. Right Brain is creative, sees the pig picture, is flexible. Left brain is logical, detail, math etc. So, Even though your resourceful Right brain sees the actual person in front of you or in the photo, when you come to sketch the eye, your logical left brain says 'I already have a symbol for that , so use this!' and you go ahead and draw the similar eye you would as a child. The one you have always done. Then you believe you can´t illustrate people. So, to master how to draw people you need to re-train your brain - unlearn that childhood symbol set. It´s not as difficult as you think. Here´s a nippy illustration. If you want to copy someone´s signature or style of writing you can´t. You keep using your own letter symbols, BUT turn it the wrong way up and sketch what you see. You don´t have any symbols for inverted back to front letters. You will be switching to your right brain to make out the whole thing and you´ll be really astounded!! A side benefit of learning to draw is getting to know your own mind a bit better - for example, how, for you, these two modes compete and cooperate. I presume the biggest stumbling block is believing that you can do it. Oh I know, it’s the same the world over. “I Can’t Draw”. Well, actually you can. You just have to believe that you can. Dare to try. Imagine the feeling you will get when you show a portrait to somebody and they recognize the person! It’s such a buzz! But like everything it’s a journey and as the proverb says every journey starts with a solitary step. It’s not as hard as you think either. It’s just intimidating when you look a a sketch prepared by someone who knows how to draw people. Looking at a sketch that is almost real, or looks like a photograph merely highlights the difference between where they are and where you are in skill terms. Finally, try this. Look at someone in the room now. They don´t actually have a sharp line around their lips or eyes…do they? Humm only in drawings!! |
