What The Best Comedies Do For Us |

| If you think of the best comedies that are the funniest they
are usually the comedies that are able to reveal a part of
ourselves that we often hide. The way we express ourselves,
or the way we look are hilariously depicted by talented
comedians that have a talent for exposing the quirky traits
that make us unique. Impersonations are funny because, when done well, they usually reveal truths about us that we do not like to see or do now want to acknowledge. They are absurd exaggerations of our particular way of communicating, bearing a close resemblance to the truth in a humorous way. Comedy restores a sensible and balanced view of ourselves and our human condition. A hearty balanced view of yourself allows you to be more authentic. It is inferred that the common denominator between the human race is our struggle and need to overcome life unexpectances, foibles and disappointments. Comedians humorously keep us humble and true to ourselves, to each other while uniting us in a collective understanding that none of us have reached perfection or normalcy, however defined. If laughter is like medicine to our body, then a high dosage is highly recommended. We can all agree that stress can get the best of us, if not carefully held at bay. If we can see the humor in the midst of daily living, or take off the stress by watching a good comedy, there is a good chance that the challenges we face will become less overwhelming, and more manageable. The best comedies remind us that our own situations are not unique. When observing comedic antics they usually are too absurd for reality, but usually have a vein of truth. Comedies sometimes serve as an analogy to our own dramatic predicaments and funny exaggeration of our own struggling attempt to deal with common headaches. In well known US comedic cartoon, Bugs Bunny, a carrot munching rabbit always seems to dodge the trigger finger of determined Elmer Fudd, his rabbit hunting archenemy. In various scenarios, the resourceful rabbit dodges dim witted Fudd in seemingly impossible circumstances. Bugs predicament mimics our own, as we too dodge various problems and enemies in our own lives. Watching Bugs humorously escape various mishaps, we too, vicariously escape and deep down edge us on to press forward in the daily grind. The message is clear. Even if not literally, what is fundamentally communicated is that there is no problem that we cannot overcome. If we can identify with the comical and inventive rabbit that maneuvers his way out of every situation, we understand on some level, that we also can triumph in our daily demands. It is the ability to actually picture victory, and see our way through the situation before it happens. The best comedies beg us to see ourselves in our true light, as we really are, human. Comedies have an uncanny way to take the stress out of the day, and aid our attempt to see our way through, even if it is just the message that we are essentially all the same in our struggle for balance and purpose. |
