Over Rated Scifi Movies

There are some fantastic scifi films out there that have entertained and borken boundaries which I am fully on board with. There are however others that I just donīt get. I can see that they are good movies but I donīt really understand the level of praise that gets heaped on them. I may show myself up here as a movie idiot but here goes.

I remember the first time I saw Blade Runner. I was excited to see it as I had heard it was an absolute classic. I had seen images from the movie and it looked epic. Then I watched it and I was amzed at two things. The first was that nothing seemed to happen. The second was that I waas incredibly bored. So I slogged through it expecting things to change. When the movie finished I though. Dare I say that I thought it was crap or do I just wait a while and watch it again. I actually promptly forgot about the film until it was on TV a few years later. When it came time for the second viewing I genuinely thought I was going to get it this time as I knew what kind of movie to expect. It was a dark and grimy futuristic movie that wasnīt all about the action. It was actually just a boring bunch of guff.

The Dark Knight. Is this movie scifi or action. I would say itīs action but itīs got Batman in it so itīs got scifi at itīs core. This is a good movie but itīs not a great Batman movie and I think the praise it gets is a bit much. This movie is about a well funded vigilante who helps the police with their investigations and not about a damaged loner superhero out for vengeance. In this film Batman is just like an ex military private hire security guy employed by the cops. The film is so concerned with being as good as the Michael Mann movie Heat that it forgets that most of Batmans escapades happen at night. Even the batsuit in this film looks like it could be worn by a member of the SWAT team. His cowl is more like a helmet with ears. Then thereīs the Joker who seems oddly familiar in this movie like weīve seen his character a hundred times in horror movies.

The 1985 animated Transformers movie is one which Transformers cite as a milestone in the series. However it does suffer from the rose tinted glasses problem and has some issues namely killing off the majority of Generation 1 characters in favour of sub par new ones. We lose Ironhide, Ratchet, Prowl and Optimus Prime and what do we get in return? Hot Rod, Springer, Kup and Arcee. Not a good deal if you ask me.
