The Next Transformers Movie

The Transformers franchise has been hugely popular. It started out in the early nineteen eighties and those same characters can be seen in the cinema today. When Transformers first hit television screens in the UK I can remember the T.V. Channels only showing it for 5 minutes at a time. All though this was incredibly frustrating it left me never satisfied willing the next days short episode to arrive. The concept was original and exciting and as well as that the cartoon had some great characters. Optimus Prime, Megatron, Bumblebee, Starscream. These are names that all movie goers today are aware of, not just a niche few. How did that happen? The transition of the characters to the movie screen brought the Transformers a whole new audience.

The first Transformers was a huge success. A joint venture between Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg it had a great story, excellent robot and human characters and featured some of ILM´s best CGI to date. It reintroduced the Autobots and Decepticons albeit somewhat different looking and told the story of Optimus Prime versus Megatron once again. The movie of course spawned a sequel called Revenge of the Fallen which became one of the highest grossing films ever made. In the summer of 2011 Dark of the Moon was released which intoroduced 3D into the mix and proved incredibly popular.

As is becoming standard in the movie business the director Michael Bay decided that he would not be involved in a fourth movie. But where there´s a thriving toy industry and record breaking movie ticket sales there will be more sequels. So what will be the next step for the Transformers stylistically and storywise? The franchise has the benefit of having a huge number of characters to play with. It also has a huge fanbase dating back to the original series and toys known as Generation 1. The movies haven´t been particularly successful at adapting the characters and placating hard core fans. The movies have given their own slant on the franchise to attract the most viewers possible and it worked. The hardcore fans would love a movie that stayed faithful to the designs in the original series with the iconic version of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee but unless a director with a love for the original source material takes on the project I can´t see that happening.

So for the fourth installment what should we expect. The dreaded reboot is a possibility. Hollywood is not shy at rebooting successful movie franchises. It gives them a chance to start all over again and sell a new story and new toys. The viewer unfortunately has to sit through another introduction movie. There could be a fourth movie in the series. We are seeing that less and less these days but it is still happening such as with the Saw and Pirates of the Carribean movies. For a fourth movie the writers would need to come up with new villains but that´s not a problem in the Transformers universe. There are plenty to choose from such as Galvatron, Unicron, Quintessons Thunderwing or even just Megatron again. I think they should give Megatron a rest for a while and then give him a glorious return a few films down the line. For the Autobots characters the writers could choose from a raft of them but I think they will at the very least keep Optimus Prime and Bumblebee due to their popularity.
