  Number 1

Make sure you set yourself a goal

There is a difference between having a goal and just practicing. It isn't just a case of repeating the same practice over and over, it is about setting out what you want to achieve. For example sitting and playing scales and arpeggios over and over 'will not' improve your playing. However deciding to learn a certain piece within a certain amount of time by practicing every day for 15 minutes really can help improve your playing and skills. Then once it has been perfected, try transposing it into a different key.

Number 2

Play with a friend

Playing with people is always the best way to improve faster. Try and join some friends or a band you will bounce of each other and learn to play in time and improvise, it will really help all of your playing skills. Playing with other people is also the best way to improve rhythm. It is more fun than playing on your own and can make learning even basic songs even more fun. People in bands and groups often progress a lot faster than people who just practise and play on their own. It also helps you get over the fear of playing in front of people.

Number 3

Ignore the mistakes you make

Everyone is going to make mistakes, everyone has to start somewhere, just keep playing and make sure you keep practicing. Mistakes are a part of learning as long as you can identify where you went wrong you can fix the mistake. Just keep going and know that in the end you'll forget where you even made the mistakes when you first played it, just that you now know how to play and have improved your skills.

Number 4

Learn Chords First

If you learn the chords which are basic first before tackling a massive classical piece, you ware a long way ahead of everyone else. Most music is based on simple chords if you can master them, you are be able to play a lot of famous songs which makes learning and playing even more fun.

Number 5

The Right Mental Attitude

Making sure your mindset and attitude are in a good place is the most important thing when learning. Having a correct mental attitude will set you on your way to learning. Understanding about moving forward and learning and having goals in mind that you want to achieve all with a positive attitude really help you when learning. Practicing because you have to and just going through the motions will not get you anywhere. This approach nearly always leads to boredom and eventually giving up.

Try focusing on making positive improvements and setting mini goals for each practice you do. Learning a chord, a song, or something else will give you a real sense of progress.

Number 6

Make Sure You Have a Clear Mind

If you had a rubbish day, received rubbish news, been arguing etc. then you should not practice untill you have calmed down, you will not get the most out of your practice session as you will be distracted. You have to get yourself in the right frame of mind so you can make the most out of your practice session.
Try doing something that calms you down, like have a bath, have a walk, or read a book, if you still can't find a way to get yourself in right mood then skip that days session and come back the next day more focused.
