A lot of instruments help us generate a lot of nice music. One of the most popular types is string instruments.

It creates sound through one or more vibrating strings that may be created out of synthetic, metal, or even natural materials. Its pitch would vary by the tension applied on the string, the sound board of the instruments, as well as the length and thickness of the attached strings.

String instruments may be categorized based on how the strings are created to vibrate. The main techniques are by bowing, plucking and striking.

In bowing method, a stick with stretched hairs between its ends is used in bowing over the strings to make them vibrate thus producing sound. The pitch created would depend on the thickness and length of the strings. Common instruments in bowing are the violin, cello, viola, and double bass.

One other method in playing string instruments is by plucking utilizing fingers, picks, or with a plectrum like in guitars. One or more strings are plucked, we call this pizzicato. There is the buzz pizzicato which is done by forcefully plucking the string, the snap pizzicato by pulling the string perpendicularly away from the fingerboard, and the nail pizzicato where you pluck using only one fingernail.

Striking the strings is also one method to create sound which may be executed with the hand or probably another object. A good example of this is the piano. Music can be created by pressing the keys that would make the hammers strike the strings inside the piano.

One of the most well liked string instruments is the guitar that comes in a number of different shapes and sizes. It can be played by plucking, striking and strumming the strings using either fingers or a pick. Guitars are of two types: Acoustic and electric.

If the string of the instrument is thick and heavy, it would vibrate slowly thus creating a deep and low pitch. If the string is thin and light then a high pitch sound would come out.

Long strings usually vibrate much slower than the short ones, so the shorter the strings the higher the pitch produced.
