What are LPN to RN programs? Let's clear up the basic concepts: An LPN, sometimes also called LVN, is a Licensed Practical Nurse (or an Licensed Vocational Nurse). This is the basic nursing licensed degree. The next nursing license level is called RN Registered Nurse. LPN programs will usually run for 1-2 years, while RN programs are longer: 2 to 4 years, depending on the academic degree achieved. An RN must have an academic degree, which at the lowest level would be an ASN degree (ASN is Associate Nurse). Many RN's have a nursing bachelor degree BSN. An LPN will typically be working under the supervision of an RN. An LPN's job description may include taking vital signs of patients, administrating injections, bandaging wounds, giving patients and families basic instructions about their medical care, and more. An RN's job may have more responsibilities, like establishing the patients' plan of care, observing and recording medical history, and even managing a team of nurses.

There are many LPN to RN programs to choose from. Many of these programs can be taken online. Since an LPN candidate will usually have years of clinical experience, the missing part for RN license are mainly academic courses which can be followed online. Such a course would be perfect for an LPN who has a nursing job and wants to advance her career. A working nurse may not have the time to attend classes in the local college or university, but can find the time on evenings or other times when not on call. Online programs can be taken on your own pace, at your convenience. There is no rush to be completing the courses on a certain time; you can usually spread the courses depending on your available time.

The length of such a bridge program is the next question most people have. The answer really depends very much on the type of course you are taking (regular or online, part time or full time, etc.). In some cases you can finish an LPN to RN program in as little as 12 months!

What are the qualifications needed for these online LPN to RN Programs? The exact qualifications needed for these programs vary from state to state, as a minimum GPA score, but on general if you are an LPN the restrictions on you to become an RN are few.
There are many LPN to RN bridge programs available, many of them are also available online. Since an LPN had lots of hands-of experience nursing training, most of the program can be done online, and indeed many universities and colleges do offer such courses. An online LPN to RN program is a perfect solution for a nurse who is already working as an LPN and doesn't have the time to attend classes in a regular university program. An online program can usually be taken at your own pace, at your own convenience. That means there is no rush as to when you should be completing your courses.

Be sure you are registering to a good program in an accredited school. Check out the material needed for your state's RN license exam and make sure the program you are entering covers all the material.
Once you finish your LPN to RN program and have your license, you are sure to look back with gratefulness and be happy with your newly acquired title.
