| If you are currently on the job market looking for a new
opportunity, you want to be sure that you land one that
you'll be happy with and can stick with for the long term.
Whether you are currently unemployed or unhappy with your
current employment, you'll want to determine what it is you
want first before beginning your search. To determine which direction you should go with your job search, first take an inventory of all your likes and dislikes concerning your current or previous jobs. List everything you can think of from the type of manager you would like to work for, to the location of your employment. Include in your list such things as salary, benefits, opportunities for advancement and anything else that comes to mind. From the list that you've made, determine which of the items are "must haves" - in other words, of the things that you like about your previous jobs or current job, which of those things must you have in your next opportunity. For any items on the list that you don't like, list the opposite of that. So, if you're unhappy with your boss because he or she is unapproachable, condescending and a slave driver, then put down that you would like a reporting relationship where there is a mutual respect, an open door policy, etc. Your next step is to list anything else that you would like in a new job opportunity even if it's never been a part of any job you've ever held before. For instance, suppose that you've always worked in the manufacturing industry but you're really fascinated by the medical industry and would love a job in that field. List the medical industry as one of your "wants" regardless of whether or not you've ever worked for a company in that business. You most likely have skills that are transferable to another industry so don't let the lack of experience hold you back. Ultimately, you need to be strategic about your job search. It won't do you any good to keep your options open for everything and anything. I've been a resume writer for many years and I've rarely seen that work. By listing what you want first, you can determine the right course of action in terms of developing your resume and your job search strategy. The number one thing that prevents people from getting more job interviews and landing a job they're happy with is a lack of focus. |
