  In the first place, what is the need for dust control? When dust is formed, dust emissions need to be reduced through the use of control system. However, dust control system installation is not a guarantee for absolute prevention of dust emissions, but a dust control system that has been sufficiently designed can provide substantial protection.

Other benefits that can be realized from dust control systems include;

• Risk of dust explosion or fire is substantially prevented or reduced

• Bad odours are prevented

• Maintenance as well as clean-up costs are significantly reduced

• Wear and tear of equipment is also minimized, particularly for certain components – pulleys and bearings. For these types of components, fine dust can produce a ‘grinding’ effect on them and cause abrasion or wear rate to increase.

• Dust control system guarantees uninterrupted compliance with health regulations in existence

• When dust is controlled, the productivity and morale of workers are raised.

Adequate planning, design, setting up, operation as well as maintenance are necessary for effective, fair cost and dependable dust control system.

What are the Types of Dust Control Systems?

There are essentially 3 fundamental types of dust control systems presently in use for operations related to minerals processing. They include; Wet Dust Suppression, Airborne Dust Capture and Dust Collection.

Wet Dust Suppression: this technique employs water sprays for wetting the material, for the purpose of less dust generation.

Airborne Dust Capture: this dust control technique may employ the water-spray method also; on the other hand, dust particles that are airborne are sprayed using atomized water. As the dust particles come in contact with the water droplets, this will lead to the formation of agglomerates (which gets over-weighed to stay airborne).

Dust Collection System: this system employs the principles of ventilation in trapping the dust-filled airstream, and subsequently carts it away from its origination via ductwork to the collector.

Choosing a Dust Collection System

Choice of dust control system is usually accomplished depending on the air quality desired, as well as existing regulations. Wet dust suppression system, as well as the airborne dust capture system do not require much cost for their installations and operations. However, there is need for good planning, and the equipment must be selected with care to ensure that they function effectively. The dust collection systems offer more efficient and reliable control for a protracted time frame; however, they are somehow expensive to operate, as well as the initial cost of acquiring them.

Bear this in mind; there is need to survey the facilities that have need of the dust control systems extensively before choosing any system for dust control. Focus should be on conditions for the operation, related dust issues, the features of the processing equipment, as well as dust toxicity.

No doubts, dust collection system is among the top techniques for controlling dust emissions. It is also known as local exhaust ventilation system.

The major components of a dust collection system include Ductwork, Exhaust hood, Fan and Motor, and a Dust Collector.
