| Almost every person plans before embarking on a vacation.
Let´s use a automobile guidance device as an example. There
are a large number of such devices available on the market.
Let´s call it Gloria—mine has a female voice. If yours is
masculine, you might not want to use the name Gloria so pick
another. Most of these machines work pretty much the same way. First, each of these machines contain or can access a map of the territory. Almost every one of these machines has a map that covers a very large area. For example, all of the USA and certain Canadian provinces. But, the map is not reality it´s only a drawing of the terrain. Later in the article we will review this again. What´s wonderful about that is you have access to the entire map any time, but do not have to wonder about it all. This means you only have to focus on a short section of road. A paper map can be utilized in the same way. You only need to look at a short part of it. Next, decide where you want to go. You will not need to spend any mental energy thinking about every step of the way. All you really need to do is to enter your address into the machine´s screen. Some of the machines will ask you if you would like a fast route or a scenic route. Either way after entering the address and deciding on your trip criteria you´re ready. Third, start driving. You can even going totally the wrong direction. The voice in the machine will keep you on track regardless of what you do. Wrap your mind around this idea. No matter what you do, Gloria will correct your behavior. If you take a left when you should take the right, Gloria will give you a new instruction to get you back on track. Gloria never scolds just provides suggested corrective action. Whatever you do the friendly voice will give you yet an Whatever you do the friendly voice will give you yet another step. This process continues until you´ve reached your destination. What is the relationship between a navigation device and business? Far too many businesses go without a guidance system. Most businesses operate out of a philosophy of taking things as they come. This is not necessarily a bad concept. A simple business in a simple environment will work well using this method. In fact, it is fairly simple to install a business navigation system just like the auto system called Gloria. Plus, it works really well. Remember, you are in the real world and a map isn´t the real world. A map is not real in the respect you can operate a business directly on it. However, every business needs something to represent their business environment. The map we need for a business situation tells us all about our customers, vendors, partners, government, competitors, regulations—the whole environment. Any business situation this “map” is better known as a situational analysis. We build this and revise it with periodic situational analyses. Once we have the analysis done, we file it and retrieve it when needed. Think of all the destinations as goals, targets or objectives. Much like physical destinations our goals can be a short time from now or a long time from now. All of the actions we take our much like short trips on the way to our goals. Record these goals at periodic meetings and make everyone´s goals available to the entire team. Recording goals is the equivalent of entering destinations into a navigation system. The individual members of the team will be at various stages of on-track and off-track at any given time. Periodic progress reporting meetings to ascertain where people are on their goals. Then, everyone can make suggestions to each other. Each person is free to reject or accept their teammates input. If you have not yet done so, install a guidance system in your company and its various teams. |
