| I was with my consultant today and we were discussing his time in management and he was relaying a story to me that left me stuck for words. In fact the message was so original that I can have disregarded it exclusively. He was telling me that he had just taken on a new role in a big organisation and he obtained the terrific perk of having his own secretary. At the end of his basic day or so he uttered the two magic words – not the kind uttered by Harry Potter but the kind indicated my professionals in the area of individuals motivation – wait for it – yes he said "thank you". As I said I nearly disregarded this data but his secretary was gobsmacked and can have visibly appeared shocked so he said "What's faulty? " thinking he can have inadvertently insulted her. But she said "I have worked here for 25 years and you’re the basic individual who has thanked me". 25 years and not one thank you – where did the woman ever get the motivation to come into work? Recognition is a large motivator for individuals, more than cash as stated by Herzberg. As leaders we are best served to dont forget that a well delivered "thank you" is not such a lot an indication of good manners but is likewise a highly useful tool of motivation. In fact there’s numerous talk lately regarding in which way to get dandier employee engagement and this is one way to accomplish it. How a great deal more engaged do you think the secretary was once she felt acknowledged and cherished for her attempts? You may be guaranteed that her level of engagement was far dandier after the fundamental interaction with her boss. Of course I'm not recommending that we overuse or abuse the term because then its power can become diluted, but perchance you may creatively think of new ways to thank your team for the attempts that they put in. Sometimes we can make things more complex than they require to be. For instance performance management schemes can over-complicate the procedure of employee motivation as they seek to reward and therefore reinforce suitable behaviours in organisations. However a well delivered thank you in the form of a round of beers at the pub at times may have more power than the multi-million pounds invested in external advisors seeking to advance organisational performance. So the message here’s one of KIS – keep it simple, individuals will esteem you more So thank you for reading this and I hope that it is having helped to remind you of the power that you may invoke in someone else by authentically delivering those two treasured magic words. |
