PR Is In The News: Some Use Negative Forms Of PR To Create Positive Results |

| Most will agree that having a bad reputation is sometimes
better than not having a reputation at all. With that said,
to define public relations, it is simply the consumer or
public's opinion or viewpoint toward your product, service
or good. Sometimes the viewpoint is aimed at an individual
like a politician Public relations are way to get noticed. Unfortunately, some have launched public relations campaigns just to air out some old dirt. But why is this so bad? Again, any effort weather good or bad that gets people talking is good and sometimes considered a form of advertising. Celebrities have been accused of such public relations strategies in the past. When their careers have been pushed to the back burner, they will come out with some outrageous blunder. Janet Jackson was thought to have done something similar at a Super Bowl game. Most recently, British Petroleum or BP had the largest oil spill in U.S. history. They definitely called in the public relations experts. They even allowed the president of BP to get on TV to convince the public that he was doing everything that he could to clean up the mess. Some local retailers of gasoline stores wanted to change their name back to Exxon because some consumers decided to boycott BP. I don't know that BP could have done much more in the way of a public relations effort. They were seen everywhere and portrayed a very sorry yet responsive attitude. One notable dynamic is that the media and news outlets all impact the public relations effort. BP may have done everything possible, done the right things etc. but after the news media gets through with the story, they are the scum of the earth. Political candidates are now, more than ever, subject to the tenants of public relations. If it is discovered that a candidate has a sketchy background or is caught in the middle of a scandal something will have to be done to control public and media bias. A huge public relations effort will have to be made if the candidate expects to survive. We see this almost weekly now with the current administration. Every year we hear of an auto maker with another recall concerning some component that has to be repaired or replaced. Consumer confidence will plummet if the company doesn't go on a public relations blitz to let everyone know that they are going to make it right and explain the scope of the problem. |
