Owning a boat sans an outboard motor is no fun. They can be rowed using oars, but the fun factor of fleeting through the water is not there. For that fun you need additional power than your arms can provide. When purchasing an outboard engine, you should ensure that it delivers the correct horsepower required for the boat for which it is being purchased. While it makes no difference if a car is slightly overpowered or underpowered, there is hardly any margin for errors of this type with boats. In case you did not get the point, here are the details.

An underpowered boat shall not perform properly and will also put drag on the outboard. Then again, chances of accidents and damages to the boat increase drastically if it is overpowered. It always pays to abide by the max limit and the horsepower rating guide provided by the manufacturer of the boat even if you have a thorough knowledge about outboard motors. If your boat weighs less than 35 lbs then you should go in for a 2-4 hp motor because they are perfect for small boats.

They can be used on portable boats, small sailboats, canoes, and inflatable boats. These motors provide one more advantage since they have their integrated gas tanks and thus are totally self contained. If the weight of your boat is between 40-60 lbs then you should opt in for 5-8 hp motor. They are suitable for canoes, jon boats, inflatable boats, and portable boats. The best part of this category of motors is that their engines are light enough to be transported easily, yet they are quite powerful.

For boats that weight between 65 lbs to 100 lbs, purchase a 9.9 to 18 hp engines. They are versatile and extremely powerful. They are suitable for those who want to travel to distant locations on their boat since they provide a far better speed than the engines mentioned above. They are also perfect for boats that are used for transporting heavy cargoes.

This article is by no means comprehensive, even though it tries to guide you in selecting the perfect engine. They are manufactured by various companies and you should pick one that appeals most to you. Why not ask about them from whom you have purchased the boat... they have optimum knowledge of such things?
