What is VoIP, or voice over Internet protocol?

Have you ever heard of VoIP, or 'voice over Internet protocol'? VoIP is technology that turns analog audio signals into digital data that can then be transmitted over the Internet.

That´s a simplified explanation of what this is, but the real question is, what can it do for you?

How is VoIP better than the analog service offered by phone companies?

VoIP has several advantages over traditional phone service, which utilizes analog technology.

It saves you money

VoIP service can help you save significant money by turning most of your phone calls into free phone calls. Because it utilizes the Internet, you won´t pay more for your phone calls than what your VoIP provider already charges you for your monthly fee. That means you pay one flat rate, and you´re good to go. You can call long-distance with no worries about steep phone bills, and you can even save significant money on international calls.

It gives you clearer calls

Although analog service providers would disagree, in fact, VoIP service can actually give you crystal clear calls, calls that are clearer, in fact, than those offered by analog phone services. That´s because with voice over Internet protocol, sound signals are converted into digital data, which travels over the Internet at lightning speed, with no loss of quality.

Other Considerations

In addition to the obvious advantages VoIP can give you, there are also other considerations to keep in mind if you opt for VoIP phone service:

You can use your analog telephone equipment

Your VoIP service provider uses what is called an analog telephone adapter so that you can use your analog phone equipment to make calls just as you normally would. With this adapter, also called an ATA, you can connect your standard phone to your computer or Internet through a router. The adapter is really an 'analog-to-digital converter,' which means that it takes the analog signal from your phone, converts it into digital data, and then transmits it over the Internet.

You can also connect directly through your computer

This type of connection is even easier than the ATA connection, in that you can talk directly through your computer. You just need some software and a pair of headphones with a microphone, a sound card on your computer, and a fast Internet connection. A lot of companies out there offer this type of service for little to no cost, and the only fees you´ll pay are those your Internet service provider charges. It does have its inconveniences, in that you can 'only' talk through your computer, but it´s yet another option.

You can try before you buy

If you want to try to use voice over Internet protocol before you subscribe to a service, you can do so just by finding some free VoIP software and the Internet. Download it, set it up in a few minutes, and begin to experiment with it. You won´t pay any fees beyond those your Internet service provider charges; get a friend to download the software, too, so that you can experiment with it before you decide to buy.
