People lose the data stored on their computer every day. Even though most businesses today rely on computers and store very important data on them, many of these businesses don’t understand the importance of offsite backups. There are a myriad of things that could happen to your computer that would result in all of your data being lost.
One of the most likely things to happen to your computer is that it malfunctions in some way. Whether due to spilled coffee or a virus from the internet, this can have very real consequences for your business if you do not have your data backed up in some way. Another way that your data can be lost that can’t be as easily avoided as spilling coffee or internet viruses is natural disasters. Be it an earthquake, a hurricane, or a wildfire, a natural disaster can destroy your computer and all of your data with it. The last, least predictable way to lose your data is for your office to be burglarized. You never know when a burglar may strike and one of the most likely things that they would steal is technology. This would include computers and monitors as well as any onsite backup that you may have.
There are many different ways that you can back up your data to prevent data loss. The cheapest way is to buy an external hard drive. You can set up a program that will automatically backup your computer’s data to the hard drive. If you want to make this more secure, you can back up your hard drive once a week and keep it in another location the rest of the time. The most secure way to back up your data is to use a data service center. Most data service centers are located in secure locations, have great security, and have redundant internet and power. Many of these centers will work with you to find the best plan for your budget.
Some of these data service centers even offer colocation hosting. A colocation host is a place you can store a server that you own & have it managed by professionals. Storing your server in this manner can give you access to higher bandwidth using the professional facilities than storing it in your own office.
When looking for a data service center or colocation host, you should research each company thoroughly. You should make sure that they have redundant power, internet, and HVAC systems. They should have a secure location with 24/7 security and above all good customer service and tech support. While it may be tempting to use a service that is less expensive but doesn’t have some of these things, in the long run it is generally worth it to pay the extra money for a good, secure service.
