With the discovery and invention or computers and the World Wide Web, there comes a great need for personal network security. Anyone has access to the internet, including those trying to find ways to hack your system. You will need to take precautions with your security measures in order to avoid unnecessary hardships.

There are many things you can do to secure your computers, but there are also things you can do to your wireless network to help as well. You will need to set up a unique username and password. You should also enable any encryption and filtering programs that are provided to you. You may also be able to decrease your wireless signal.

Your wireless router will come with a default name and password. These ID's are very easy to guess and should be changed as soon as possible. When changing your username make sure it's not too personal. You don't want to give out things like your last name.

The SSID is normally broadcasted publically so others searching for wireless networks will be able to see yours. This makes it easy for you to connect to it but also allows others to try and get onto it as well. To avoid all of this you can disable this setting making your SSID completely private and invisible to others.

WPA stands for Wi-fi Protected Access. This is an encryption set up automatically on your router that protects it. Make sure you enable the WPA encryption if it is possible. The old encryption was called WEP and limited the kind of passwords you could have making it easier to hack into.

If you cannot enable WPA, make sure the WEP is still up and running. When you get a chance, make the upgrade to the stronger WPA encryption as it will provide better security. You can never have enough security when it comes to the internet.

MAC filtering is another form of security offered to individual computer systems. Unlike your network address, the MAC address is specific to individual systems. This makes it more time consuming as each computer will need its own MAC set up. However, it will add another security measure to your wireless network.

Limiting the range of your wireless signal can really keep hackers off of your system. Many routers don't come with this capability, but if yours does make sure you use it. Make sure the signal reaches only where it is needed.

There are many things you can do to protect yourself and your wireless network. Be sure to take every step possible as some people are extremely educated on how to hack your systems. You can never have enough security setup on your computer or your wireless network.
