My Router Isn't Connecting To The Internet

Routers are generally easy to setup and maintain, but sometimes problems arise. This article addresses some common issues router users may experience.

Routers have a web based utility that you use to access the routerīs settings. One of the most common problems is forgetting how to log on and what the username and/or password is. The good news is that this information is usually written on a sticker on the underside of the router.

To log into your router you need to first be connected to the router. You can then type in the routerīs IP address into the address bar of a web browser. It is usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. If it isnīt one of these, type in 'ipconfig' and look for the IP address for your network adapter. Use the address they give you, but change the number after the third period to a 1.

Some computers may need to be physically connected to the router to access the routerīs settings and to enable the wireless settings for the first time. Check to make sure the cable to the Ethernet port on the computer and the Ethernet port on the router are securely connected.

Often when people change the default username and passwords on their router, they end up forgetting them. Itīs a good idea to take some masking tape and write your username and password on your router so you can easily find it. If you have forgotten your login information you will need to reset your routerīs settings.

To reset the router find the reset button or hole on the rear of the unit. Using a paperclip press the reset button and hold it down for 10 seconds. Once you release the button the router will go through its reset process.

If you have access to the network but not the internet check the status of the routerīs lights. Check to see if the internet light on the modem is indicating the correct status. If it isnīt, check that the internet modem has access to the internet and check to see if the network cable is securely attached to the Ethernet ports between the router and the modem.

If the internet is still not working you may have some settings that need to be set manually in your router. You can also check any firewalls as they may cause interference to/from the internet if not setup properly.
