| The least expensive way to connect several computers
together is by using a hub. A hub simply passes on
information it receives from one computer to all the other
computers it is connected with. Each computer must determine
if the information is meant for it. This works fine for networking a few computers that won´t be transferring large packets of information. Information packets must be transferred one at a time through the hub or collisions occur. When several computers try transferring information at the same time, it slows down the transfer rate for everyone on the LAN (local area network). A hub is a simple piece of equipment. It serves as a transfer device that simply take information received through one port and sends it out through all the other ports. It has a layer one function for transferring information. A hub is a broadcast model. With a hub, if someone in the network is downloading a large file, and someone else wants to also use the Internet, it slows both down considerably. In homes with four or more computers doing a lot of multi-player gaming, a hub will be considerably slower than if using a networking switch. When several computers are networked, a lot of information traffic is generated when using a hub. This can create information traffic jams. Using a switch instead of a hub will cut down on unnecessary information traffic. The switch only passes on the information addressed to that particular computer. When using an Ethernet switch, the network is divided into multiple bridges, and each port is assigned to a specific computer. Upon receiving packets of information, the Ethernet switch reads the address embedded in the information and sends it on to just the computer it is addressed to. With this method, multiple connections can occur at the same time throughout the network. Switches are considered to have a layer two and above functionality. Layer two switches will handle most networking needs. A router is a layer 3 switch that can communicate between different types of connections and allows your computer to not only connect to other networked computers (LAN), but also to connect to the internet (WAN) The outside of both hubs and switches look pretty much the same, but their function and cost differ greatly. As expected, an Ethernet switch will cost more than a simple hub. The switch has the added intelligence the hub lacks. |
