| Our lives have been greatly affected, and revolutionised
with the advent of information technology. Every field of
life, be it health, entertainment, and education, have been
greatly revolutionised due to the information technology.
Information technology has made education much more
interactive, informative, and collaborative than it was
before. There is no doubt that information technology has
raised the competition, but on the other hand, it has helped
in reaping brighter minds that are filled with knowledge. In the bygone days, people, mostly scholars, used to travel to different parts of the world to gain knowledge form others, and to share their knowledge with other people. People used to travel to far-flung areas to quench their thirst of knowledge. Only a few libraries were present in far off countries. Therefore, people used to travel to these libraries in order to gain benefit from them. However, today, information about everything is available on the World Wide Web. Through this magical tool, you can gain knowledge about topics that you would have never expected you would get material to learn about. Books from qualified authors, research papers, publications, you name it and it is present somewhere in this easy to solve puzzle. There are many big and famous universities of the world, such as Harvard, Cambridge, Yale, and UCL, which are collaborating with each other for the purpose of research. This is only possible because of the high quality, and bandwidth networks between these universities. All the researchers can interact with each other with the help of the facility of video conferencing. It is very easy to share the study material. There is also no need to travel to any country in order to benefit, or access a particular book. All this has been made possible because of the IT networks all around the world. There are many people who are benefiting from the video lectures given anywhere in the world through the IT networks. This has brought a great revolution in the field of education, as students can now benefit from the lectures of many famous lecturers around the world at a minor cost. A new concept of distance learning, or distance education has been introduced with the introduction of it networks. If we look at the definition, distance learning means that education is provided through technology, and instructional systems, without the physical presence of a person there. This type of an educational system, which is aimed at providing education to the students outside their classrooms. There are two types of technologies used in this system; these are synchronous, and asynchronous. In the synchronous system, it is compulsory for the students to be present at the site of the lecture. Whereas in an asynchronous system, the students have the privilege to access, and view the study material at any time, which is convenient for him. The various mediums that are used for transferring knowledge are web based VoIP, telephony, video conferencing, web conferencing, emails, and audiocassettes. Many different types of distance education courses are there. All have their own method of correspondence, which include regular email, synchronous, or asynchronous courses through the internet, tele-course/broadcast, and pocket pc training, all having their own styles. The IT network is playing a vital role in transforming the modern education system, and making it better. |
