  Siemens Industry and Automation offers a line of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) including the s7-300s, s7-400s, and s7-1200. The s7-1200 PLC has replaced the former s7-200 version. These PLCs can communicate using different protocols, such as MPI, Profibus, Ethernet, and As-I bus. The PLCs also offer a wide range of I/O modules that may be used in just about any combination.

Simatic Step 7 engineering software is used to program the s7-300s, s7-400s, and the s7-1200s. The engineering software is also IEC61131-3 standard compliant. S7 Professional is the most comprehensive version, which includes S7-Graph, S7-SCL, S7-PLCSIM, and the Step 7 Basic Software. Some advanced features are also included that weren't too common in PLC software. Step 7 engineering software has the following advantages:

Symbol Based Programming - The programming environment is capable of Symbol based programming, which is a more powerful methodology. The use of symbols enables the code to be more readable and simpler to troubleshoot. The code is relatively structured, and the programmer doesn't have to focus on problems of adding values in the middle of any symbol list because the addresses shift without affecting the rest of the programmed code.

Function Blocks - Function blocks enable programmers to write reusable code blocks. There is no need to repeat the code in the same program or to reprogram common functions in subsequent projects.

Supports Several Programming Languages - offers the options to use different programming languages, including Ladder, Structured Control Language, Function Block Diagram, and Structured Text. Built-In Function Library - offers a great collection of built-in functions library that includes simple motion control capabilities to ordinary math functions to PID loop control options.
