How To Keep Your Wool Coats Lint Free And Looking Their Best.

Winter is here and I’m one of the few that couldn’t be happier. As an avid snow skier, I dream about those bluebird days in the mountains and the powdery snow crunching under my feet. But when I’m not on the slopes, I still wanted that warm cozy feeling like that first sip of cocoa after a morning of great skiing.

So as I shopped late this Fall for my new winter coat, I fell in love with a sleek, black woolen pea coat that was as cozy as my bathrobe. Yes, I know it’s contradictory to say anything wool is cozy but you cannot deny its warmth and the classic styling of a pea coat.

And then I started noticing, my new black coat wasn’t so black anymore. It was covered in lint all the time. My tailored classic look had transformed into an unkempt, fuzzy mess and the coat was just a few weeks old.
So how do you keep your wool coats looking their best? Here are a few tips I found that have worked for me.

1.) One easy trick is to keep your coat static free. This is done rather simply with the purchase of an anti-static spray. It is best to do this before you wear your coat for the first time. However, if it’s too late, begin by removing any lint with a lint brush or sticky tape. Then spray the entire garment evenly with the anti-static spray. De-lint and reapply as often as needed so as to prevent the build-up of lint.

2.) In a pinch, you can also use a dryer sheet. Dryer sheets have anti-static properties and the rough surface can assist in loosening any current lint. Simply rub the dryer sheet over the garment softly.

3.) When laundering your garment, be sure to wash it by hand. If you are unable to wash it by hand, make sure it is the only piece of clothing in the load. Fabrics like wool, will easily pick up excess lint from other garments during a wash cycle. Often this type of lint is very difficult to remove.

4.) Though I have not tried this method, others have suggested utilizing a hand-held vacuum cleaner to remove lint.

Remember the more wool content in your coat, the more lint it will attract. Before purchasing your coat, look for a fabric with a wool blend. Lint rollers are an easy and fairly efficient way to remove lint on the run and can be found in pocket sizes for anytime use.
