Choosing what to wear to work is a daily plight that almost all of us go through, but that few of us find easy. Choosing what to wear to work sends a very clear message about how we view ourselves, how we view our organizations and where we view ourselves within our organization. There is a complex and subtle politics surrounding what to wear and this must all be considered when asking the impossible question: what do I wear tomorrow?

What you wear to work first and foremost must conform with the rules and regulations of your business. It might be that you are required to wear a tie to your particular workplace and that this is a requirement. At the same time though it might be that you have to wear a suit or just a shirt. Other workplaces are more relaxed and allow you to wear within reason whatever you like, but this sometimes can just make matters more difficult as you have too broad a range of things too choose from.

There are other matters to consider. For instance there´s the fact that what you wear projects who you are. If you want to be taken seriously as a professional, then you need to dress seriously and professionally in order for that to work. Furthermore if you want to make yourself appear more suitable to a task than someone else in your office, then one of the best ways to achieve that is to make yourself better dressed.

Being well dressed at works shows that you woke up early with time to spare, that you have the resources to dress well, and that you take care over small details. This then means that you are more likely to be someone who can be trusted with big decisions and who would make a good selection for a range of roles. At the same time the fact that you dress well will of course make you better suited to being the public face of your corporation and your employers are more likely to be happy with the idea of your representing the company and acting as an ambassador.

Then there´s the fact that you actually work better when you dress better. This might sound strange, but the simple matter is that if you look good, then you feel good. And if you feel good then that will make you more likely to do a job. This is why many people who are self employed and work from home will still opt to dress well in suits and other smart clothes so they feel ready for work and able to do their best job.

This is all ignoring the politics of the office itself. For instance, if there is someone you find attractive at work, then you are going to want to dress your very best to catch their eye. Meanwhile if you don´t dress well then you´ll find that this effects the way people talk about you and perceive you in the office.
