At some stage in our lives, we all have them, under the nose and above the chin, but then do we really know everything we should about them? Here are the answers to some of our frequently asked questions on teeth. Teeth come in different types for each serves a purpose. Your front teeth are also known as incisors. Not only the sharpest, these are also used to shovel food in. Canine teeth grow near the corner of the mouth. When it comes to tearing or grasping food, these teeth with long roots function well. Premolars crush food using their flat chewing surfaces and they are the ones found right behind the canines. Molars on the other hand boast of bigger and flatter chewing area as these are much larger than the premolars. Food is broken down into small portions courtesy of these.

Every tooth is made of two basic parts: a root and its crown. The crown is right on top and can easily be seen when the mouth is open whereas the root is right below the gum line and serves 66 percent of the tooth's length. A distinct kind of tissue makes up every single one of our teeth. The tooth enamel protects it from wear and tear caused by frequent chewing. The yellow, bone-like matter that carries nerve fibers and support the enamel is known as the dentin. At the very core of the tooth is where the pulp is, and it also protects the blood, lymph vessels and nerves.

Pulps are the parts of teeth that transmit signals to the brain and ensures the teeth are nourished properly. Our teeth are connected to the jaw bones by the one that covers it, the part known as the cementum. The part known as the periodontal ligament cushions and also connects the jawbone to the cementum.

While many of us know that braces effectively align teeth, do you know exactly how it works? Straight teeth do not only serve aesthetic purposes but also promote the proper function of mouth in chewing and speaking. Teeth with unnatural spaces which are hard to clean are extremely prone to cavities. Pain and discomfort is known to arise when teeth are crooked and affects the jaw lines as well.

Braces and retainers which are popular orthodontic treatments, can correct this. Stubborn teeth that are crooked or have grown out of place are fixed by orthodontic treatment as it exerts general pressure on teeth over time. The three components of braces are the brackets that are attached to the teeth, the bonds that attach brackets to teeth and lastly, the arch wire that goes through the teeth and connects them.

Braces that adhere to the back of the teeth or come in transparent shades can now be obtained by orthodontic patients. Retainers would come in after braces have finished its job, which have come a very long way since its train track days of old. Using retainers which are custom made teeth appliances help keep teeth in their new straight positions. They are also known to fix small orthodontic problems. Having healthy and straight teeth do not only signify beauty but is also promotes our system to function properly. More than healthy bodies, we have other reasons to smile about when we know everything about our teeth as well as caring for them.
