| Millions of people´s ´teeth and gums are ´the victims of
periodontal disease without ´them even being aware ´they have
it; are you one of ´those unsuspecting millions? Your ´teeth
are supported by ´tissues‚ and ´these ´tissues become infected
when periodontal disease occurs܂ It is caused by ´the
plaque-forming bacteria in your mouth܂ Removing all of ´the
plaque isn´t possible by brushing and flossing‚ which
removes most of it܂ The remaining plaque hardens into
tartar܂ Gum disease can result when ´this ´tartar forms below
the gum line‚ which can irritate and infect ´the gums܂ There is good news when it comes ´to periodontal disease - it is easily preventable܂ As ´the Pennsylvania Dental Association keeps reminding ´the public‚ it is very important ´to maintain both healthy ´teeth and gums܂ The dual stages of gum disease are periodontitis and gingivitis܂ The early stage of periodontal disease is known as gingivitis; it is during ´this ´time ´that bacteria gets in between ´the teeth and gums which in ´turn causes inflammation܂ In order to reverse periodontal disease‚ daily brushing and flossing should be done during ´this early stage܂ The advanced stage of gum disease is called periodontitis‚ which develops when periodontal disease is ignored and worsens ´to ´the point of irreversibly damaging ´teeth‚ gums‚ and bone structure܂ Periodontitis is regarded as a serious medical condition due ´to its ability ´to destroy ´the ´tissue ´that connects ´the ´teeth ´to ´the bone܂ If ´this develops‚ ´the roots of ´the ´teeth will be exposed‚ which ultimately leads ´to serious ´tooth decay‚ inflammation and receding of ´the gums‚ and in some cases‚ ´tooth loss܂ Many factors‚ such as ´tobacco use‚ can also lead ´to an increased chance of one eventually developing periodontal disease܂ Other remaining factors include diseases such as diabetes‚ or even certain ´types of medications which include: oral contraceptives‚ steroids‚ and even drugs ´that are used in ´therapy for cancer܂ In addition ´to ´this ´there are physical factors like; a bridge that no longer fits snug‚ crooked ´teeth‚ fillings and even pregnancy܂ In some studies‚ researchers have come ´to ´the conclusion ´that people who are afflicted with gum disease are more at risk for developing coronary artery disease܂ This happens when bacteria lodged in ´the mouth enters ´the blood stream and reaches ´the blood vessels surrounding ´the heart‚ where it forms fatty deposits ´that can result in ´the formation of blood clots܂ The following tips will help you maintain optimal dental health and prevent periodontal disease܂ Be sure ´to brush and floss your teeth at least ´twice a day܂ A good brushing and flossing routine can help ´to rid your ´teeth of plaque and bits of food ´that are hiding just out of reach of your ´toothbrush܂ Get a replacement ´toothbrush when ´the bristles of your old one look worn out‚ or every few months܂ Another valuable regimen is antibacterial mouthwash܂ Swishing with antibacterial mouthwash prevents ´tooth decay܂ Fluoride toothpaste is also critical ´to ´tooth decay prevention܂ Make sure ´the food you eat is full of nutrients܂ The five food groups--vegetables‚ meat protiens‚ dairy‚ grains‚ and fruit--offer a wide range of foods ´to help you maintain a balanced diet܂ Schedule and attend checkups ´twice a year with your dentist for exams and cleanings܂ If you should notice at any ´time ´the symptoms of periodontal disease‚ notify your dentist as soon as possible܂ Your symptoms may include: red‚ swollen or ´tender gums‚ gums ´that bleed easily or seem ´to be pulling away from your ´teeth‚ continuous bad breath or bad ´taste in ´the mouth‚ you find that permanent ´teeth are loose or separating‚ if you see pus appearing between ´teeth and gums when gums are ´touched‚ and finally‚ if you see changes in your ´teeth alignment when you bite܂ |
