| Shoes are used and worn by people of all ages. While we
grownups choose our shoes based on the style and looks of
the footwear, in choosing shoes for children there are other
important considerations to think about. First of all we
need to know that the shoes we select and buy for the kids
will greatly affect the children’s musculoskeletal
development. These shoes will also play a role in what
posture the kids will have later in life. Notice that babies and infants only wear socks. This is not only because they are not yet fit to walk or stand but more importantly the socks allow the feet of the little ones to grow as they should. Even toddlers who are just learning how to walk need not wear shoes when inside the house. They may be allowed to go barefoot or wear socks so that the muscles and the muscle strength as well as the ability of the toes to grasp are allowed to develop. Then when the child already knows how to walk and it is already time to buy him or her some pairs of shoes, there are some useful hints to keep in mind so that appropriate children’s shoes may be bought. The right size matters a lot in picking the most appropriate shoes. In order to get the right size, each foot must be measured properly. Take the foot size while the child stands up in full weight and bearing. There are times when one foot may be slightly bigger than the other foot and for such instances, the shoe size which fits the bigger foot should be chosen. You also need to inspect the shoes very well. Make sure that the heel counter or that stiff material at the heel side is firm. The insole must also have sufficient cushioning with a fitted arch. The shoes should also be flexible and bendable not at the middle area of the shoe but at the ball area of the foot where the foot will bend. Look also for any irregularities or staples and stitches that can cause irritation on the child’s foot. It is always best to shop around for shoes with the child who will wear them. The child will need to try on the shoes and be allowed to walk around while wearing the shoes and his or her socks. The child should be asked if there are any pressure areas which he or she feels inside the shoes. After the child has removed the shoes, look at his or her foot for any signs of pain or irritation. In case you have seen a pair of really cute shoes for your child but of a smaller size than your child’s, never force the child’s feet to fit into it. Remember also that a good fit of shoes must not slip along the heels. If the child is known to have frequent ankle sprains, shoes with high tops or boot styles will be of great choices. A space of half an inch must be present in between the end of the shoe and the toe tip and the child should be able to comfortably wiggle or move his or her toes while wearing the shoes. |
