There is proof to suggest that individuals have been protecting there feet with a good deal of form of footwear since prehistoric times. At basic animal skins were wrapped around the feet and secured with ropes made from plant stems or animal sinew. Over time individuals began to cut these skins into shapes and stitch them together. The skins started to be treated to make them more lasting. The precursor of the new shoe came in the form of sandals. The sandal had a unique sole made out of hard-wearing material such like wood or thick leather. The upper was made out of leather straps or once in a while thick cloth.

Prior to 1790 when the shoelace was developed most individuals in colder climates wore boots, or slip on shoes. The rich began to wear shoes that opened up at the front and were fastened shut with buckles or with a series of buttons.

To commence with there was no left or right shoe; both shoes were the same shape. Up until 1858, they were both straight so could be worn on either foot. The soles continued to be made out of leather or wood until 1899 when Humphrey O'Sullivan patented the basic rubber heel.

The Liverpool Rubber Company introduced soles made entirely out of rubber. The tops were ordinarily made of canvas, but leather shoes still had leather soles. In the USA for the duration of the 1880s, individuals started to call these shoes sneakers, because individuals wearing them could sneak up on others.

For centuries, shoes were very high-priced, to the point where a lot of individuals could not afford to own a pair. The main reason for this was that shoe production was very labour intensive. In 1883, the auto laster was developed; it could do the same occupation 7 times rapidly and without delay than the most proficient cobbler could. Each auto laster could turn out 700 pairs of shoes per day.
