| Being in college or university is a wonderful experience
that one will never forget. It is also during this college
time that most college students will start to have their own
credit cards. In the past, when students' purchasing power
are limited to the amount of cash they carry, it is a
totally different story now that college credit cards are
readily available. As time passes and a college student's age increases, so does the amount of debt he owes. Over a few years, this can become a very serious situation. Moreover, this is not totally incurable. There are still measures that can be done to have the situation under control. Most college students start to get involved in some kind of debt when they got their first credit card. Even though this is the case, we can always educate them about credit cards and stress about their disadvantages rather than about their advantages. By doing this, we could potentially save college students from falling into the college credit card debt trap. Most credit card companies usually offer a very low introductory interest rate for their credit cards for the first year. This entices college students to quickly apply for them without giving much thought. Then for the upcoming years, this interest rate will start to increase. Luckily the credit cards' limits for these students are relatively small when compared to working adults. To curb the problem of college credit card debt is not easy. Nevertheless, we must try our best to help these students get out of credit card debt. They have to know that using their credit cards today would mean they have to pay for it later. They must be responsible for their actions. These are the principles that we must teach them. To further warn students of the dangers of credit cards, we can also point out real cases where there were college students who committed suicide just because they can't pay off their debts. A lot of them were able to only pay the minimum payments even though they have more taken more than two jobs. It is approximated that 8 out of 10 college students own at least 1 credit card, and that around 20% of college students have credit card debts of at least US$7000. One big drawback for college students involved in credit card debts is that when they graduate to find jobs, their employers typically will do some credit history checks on them just to make sure they are not heavily in debts. In today's society, people as young as 18 years of age have credit cards. They must be educated properly so that they can escape the credit card debt trap. If not, their bright future will be destroyed. |
