The Worst Fundraising Ideas For Nonprofit Organizations

Not all fundraising ideas are good ideas. In fact, many of the worst fundraising ideas for non profit organizations are still being used by nonprofits. How come? Because a lot of nonprofits tend to rely on the easiest strategies to use, or they just fail to realize how ineffective their ideas actually are. Here we examine some of the fundraising ideas that your organization should avoid.

Take the idea of getting supporters to walk up and down the hallways, walk up to a bunch of people, and plead for charity. Bad idea! – approaching to people who are working on chores, buying groceries, or on their way to work just annoys them. To be honest, a lot of charities have gotten bad reputations by relying on such face-to-face fundraising and some accuse them of harrassment. Even though some individuals will probably agree to donate, most will simply ignore your charity or be dismissive. The concept could be more profitable by setting up a table in front of a busy store and offering an item to sell, such as chocolate bars. The food will draw visitors in, allowing you to tell them more about your charitable cause and how they can give.

The thing that seems to mess up several nonprofits, is not considering about how the product they are selling seems from the view of the people first exposed to your nonprofit. To give an example, a bake sell full of cookies and sweet baked goods may work for a children´s charity but the idea would be detrimental for a charity that raises money for diabetics. That kind of charity could make a favorable impression by selling sugar free versions of popular cookies and cakes instead. Besides, the best fundraising ideas for nonprofit organizations help remind donors of your organization. If you are giving away edibles, give a flyer, a brochure, or a Frisbee too.

A lot of the worst fundraising ideas are not bad in and of themselves; they just become so due to poor planning. Consider the car wash in bad weather or the nonprofit that attempts to sell flowers in the dead of winter! (True story.) By just paying attention to the local weather forecast, the car wash could have been a success. Instead of selling flowers in the winter, a nonprofit could have sold handmade scarves, holiday wrapping paper or even hot chocolate.

With nonprofits, technology has really made it easier for people to donate; however, not all methods get the same amount of trust by consumers. Take the idea of texting charitable donations, although the idea was popular during the earthquake tragedy, more and more people are becoming leery of the idea and are worried about being unwillingly registered for reoccurring donations. Others would just rather give in a way that supports the charity instantly, since text donations often take many months before they reach you! The fact that many phone carriers put a lot of limits on phone donations makes this idea less than perfect.

The trust factor also comes into play here, nationally known charities may find some success, smaller local based charities are less likely to find success with this method because of their lack of name recognition. To rapidly raise the money your cause needs, allow contributions through your website; accepting debit, credit and online payment methods (such as PayPal), give donors the ability to donate as much as they want as often as they want.

In the end, bad fundraising ideas can be avoided by paying attention, avoiding aggressive tactics, planning for all situations and thinking about what works best for your organization.
