| “Nowhere in this country, from sea to sea, does nature
comfort us with such assurance of plenty, such rich and
tranquil beauty as in those unsung, unpainted hills of
Pennsylvania.” - Rebecca Harding Davis Such is the beauty of the Pennsylvania state, also known as the keystone state. It is bordered by New Jersey, West Virginia, Ohio, and Lake Erie and New York. Pennsylvania had been one of the leading producers of steel, ships, chemicals, oil and textiles in the United States. But its leadership in the industrial field has declined over the years. Simultaneously, Pennsylvania attracted lot of tourists to its major cities because of the beautiful scenic places and rich heritage and culture. Also, agriculture became the major contributor to the economy of the state. But now, it has been one of the foremost states that have been badly hit by the recession resulting in large amount of unemployment. By Feb 2008, the unemployment rate was 7.6 percent and by June 2008, it had risen to 9.5 percent. The recession initially hit construction and manufacturing hardest, but the continued elevated job losses indicated that the recession had started affecting nearly every part of the economy. According to reports, about 2400 jobs were added by the hospitality and the leisure industry. This was followed by some more jobs in finance and government sectors. But at the same time, the manufacturing and the construction industry laid off many people, thereby affecting the unemployment rate in Pennsylvania. To help the people who have lost their jobs for no fault of their own, the state government has been providing unemployment compensation. The longest that anyone can receive full benefit of this aid, is twenty six days. One should apply for unemployment compensation immediately after he or she stops working. The amount of unemployment compensation depends on each individual’s previous job held and the wages received on that job. Recent statistics have been showing that there has been some improvement in the economy of the United States which in turn might have a positive impact on the economy of Pennsylvania. |
