| You probably are one of many who call Yosemite National Park
a beloved place. The trip through the dim tunnels of Highway
41 and then being hit by daylight to see Yosemite Valley in
full view below is nothing short of magnificent. The
combination of the waterfalls along with the Half Dome
protuberance and the walled valley solid gray rocks make for
an awesome shot regardless of your photography skill level.
The crowds in Yosemite can be crushing, 95 percent of the people who visit the park never get beyond the 5 percent of the park that encompasses the valley. What sets Yosemite apart from sites like the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone though is its vertical aspect that make jostling through crowds tolerable. Travelers tend to look to the sky unmindful of the people around them. The visitor numbers in autumn along with winter and spring are considerably less than in summer. Great Smoky Mountains is one national park with few fans. Getting out on the trails is probably the only way to really enjoy a visit to what is by far the most visited park. Visitors total around 9.2 million a year easily doubling the number of those going to Grand Canyon. Those who have been to the park multiple times who cannot shrug off the Westerner in them often ended up unimpressed by the view. Gateway towns like Cherokee and Gatlinburg are filled with tourist traps and casinos. Air quality has taken a turn for the worse in past years. It perhaps has reached its limit having been the main allure of national parks. Wrangell Saint Elias is another national park most people wish to see. There are 55 million acres of parkland in Alaska and I've been to more than most people, including the rarely visited Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley. Park services named it The Mountain Kingdom of North America and it is located near Anchorage in the southeast. Nowhere in the country can be found mountains and glaciers towering 16000 feet. There is a North Rim national park within the Grand Canyon that most tourists believe deserve repeat visits. It might take longer to get to the Grand Canyon North Rim but travelers do not seem to mind just so they can avoid the packed South Rim. It is sometimes hard to appreciate the Grand Canyon view offerings on a return visit because tourists have their hands full nevigating through the crowds. People can encounter wildlife such as grizzly bears in Kobuk Valley together with buffalo populations in Yellowstone during their visit to Everglades. To get a more intimate connection with nature go see the alligators catching some sun rays while resting on Anhinga Trail mudflats in the area of the Everglades. Only their bodies are submerged in the brown waters with their eyes left visible above the surface but another scary image is their sharp teeth that are exposed when they yawn. It is possible that Monument Valley is a national park. Its red stone monoliths clearly represent the West. The background for many films, the area straddling Utah and Arizona is part of the Navajo Indian reservation. Unlike other regions however it has an autonomous status so turning it into a national park is very unlikely. If it were, it would have been one of my favorites. Hot Springs ought not be classified a national park according to most tourists. Arkansas has a spa town offering old style rubdowns down at the Bathhouse Row joint. It is right up there with other national historic places but as far as labeling it a national park it is not possible. Since 1832 it was designated as federal territory which was some four decades before Yellowstone and got grandfathered the same time the National Park Service was formed in 1916. There is practically no way out once you gain entry into the club. Glacier Waterton International Peace Park has a couple of surprises for its visitors. Put them together and you have one great international peace park. The Tudor Prince of Wales Hotel imitation back in Canada with the old British inspired tea hour is another must see location. |
