One of the most important inventions for those who have disabilities is mobility lifts. These lifts have been fitted into converted vehicles to enable individuals who are in wheelchairs to easily enter and exit a vehicle with minimal help, if any help is needed at all. This is a great relief for families who have disabled children or for adults who have disabilities and are looking for some way to gain some healthy independence. There are many different types of lifts that can be installed in these converted vehicles depending on the needs and personal preferences of the disabled individual.

The mobility lifts that are being produced today are much more reliable than those of days long past. The materials used to make lifts in the past caused the lifts to be heavy, clunky, and were not very stable or reliable. Lifts now are made from materials that are light, but yet stronger than older lifts. One of the most traditional types of lifts is the ramp. The ramp is basically a type of platform that allows a person in a wheelchair to be rolled down the ramp to exit the vehicle and up the ramp to enter it. These are not good options for individuals who are more independent, as rolling down the ramp can be slightly hazardous and increases the chances of having an accident when entering or exiting the van.

Mobility lifts can be installed on the outside of the vehicle or on the inside depending on the vehicle type. Outside lifts come in many different sizes, and designs are good for just about any type of vehicle. Inside mobility lifts are made with an arm type of extension that is attached to the wheelchair and then used to bring the wheelchair inside the vehicle. These are still used, but not as much since the invention of newer lifts that combine several different pieces of technology.

Newer lifts that are installed on vehicles today have platforms connected to them that are used to help transport the wheelchair into the vehicle. These lifts and platforms can be installed in two different places on the vehicle. They can be installed for use at the side doors of the van or at the rear of the van. These each have a set of pros and cons, but most people suggest going with a rear entry van, as this allows for easier parking and maneuverability.
