The current economic crisis is leaving many Americans strapped for cash and time; jobs are scarce and the number of applicants for any given job opening is steadily rising. Rent has come due, vehicles are being repossessed, and electricity is being cut off at homes nationwide, but a short term solution for some problems comes to some in the form of a payday loan.

Even though a payday loan can be hugely helpful in some situations, they can also cause you many headaches if you don't use them the way that you're supposed to. There are many different situations where getting a payday loan is fine and even encouraged, but there are many more where it is simply not a good idea. If you need groceries to get by until your next payday, then it's fine. If you are facing potentially losing your place to live, then it's fine, as long as you know you can repay the money on time. The bottom line is that if it is something that absolutely must be paid or the situation will become even worse, it's alright to get a payday loan.

Qualifying for a payday loan in most situations is fairly simple. You need to be at least 18, first of all. This is a critical requirement with most lenders and in some states, the age may be up to 21 before you can apply for a payday loan. If you're not a legal adult, you might as well not even walk into their door, because they won't touch you with a 10 foot pole. You will have to find other income solutions, if this is the case.

You also need to have a job and you need to have been there at least a few months. Lenders like it when you've been at a job for at least 6 months, but if this isn't the case, they may take references from you and call them to verify your character and work ethic. Lenders want to work with you, but if the risk is too high, then they will move on to the next applicant. Having a checking or a savings account is also recommended, as this shows the lender that you are somewhat stable.

Whatever you do, stay in contact with the payday lender at all costs. If you will be late repaying them, let them know before your loan's due date comes around. This makes sure that they stay informed of your intention to repay them, no matter how long it takes. They like honest people, not shady people who avoid phone calls.
