How Long Have People Been Drinking Coffee For?

Someone found the seed of the Coffea plant hundreds or possibly thousands of years ago and decided to cook it and then add it to water to make what we know of as coffee today, but finding a reliable history for coffee is proving tricky. However one thing you can be certain about is that no matter what the history of coffee is, then we have all grown to love it. It is hard to know if you can trust the figures, but a quick check online seems to suggest we drink as many as two billion cups of coffee around the world every day!

It is consumed in almost every country around the world to a greater or lesser degree, but certainly the Western countries seem to be the largest consumers of the drink. Brazil remains the world´s largest producer with an annual production of over 2 million tonnes of the seeds known commonly as coffee beans, with countries like Colombia and Vietnam lagging far behind.

Certainly one of the appeals of coffee is the rich taste it has, and the fact it is hot so on a cold day it can warm you up, however I also think that because most people are tired and stressed out now then the fact it contains caffeine has to be a factor in its popularity too. The first thing people so when they get to work now is to complain about how tired they are, and then say they need a cup of coffee to wake them up and get them working. Some of that will be psychological but caffeine does have a very real effect on our bodies.

The main reason caffeine helps you to feel awake is that it increases adrenaline production in your body which makes you feel far more alert. The reason people keep drinking coffee all day though is that after the adrenaline wears off then suddenly you have put your body under a lot more strain and you feel even more tired, so you feel like you need another coffee to keep you going. If you like the taste but don´t want to have to constantly chase adrenaline all day long then you could go for a decaffeinated version instead, however some people say that ruins the taste.

Coffee machines have soared in popularity over the past 10 years, and they are now a firm fixture in most kitchens. You might want to go for a larger machine if you have a large family, some machines can produce 8 cups or more which means there is enough for everyone, or there are machines which give you one cup at a time. There are a lot of different options right now, although the 1 cup coffeemaker is probably the best selling kind right now (visit 1Cup-CoffeeMaker.com for more details) and Keurig are probably the most popular brand. If you need a machine which produces a lot more than one cup at a time then instead try Cuisinart who produce some of the best selling machines with carafes that make upwards of 8 cups at a time.
