The butcher block can be the most important part of the kitchen for any serious chef. Or if you simply want to have a fine looking kitchen and you eat out every night the butcher block can be the best looking item in your kitchen. Either way you will want to have a professional cutting area in your kitchen.

Many kitchens these days are built to house a butcher block in the middle of the kitchen or somewhere it can fit easily. You can find them in many designs and sizes. If you want a fully functional one you can find them with drawers and shelves to store your cooking utensils.

You will discover that the block will make you into a better cook. If you are not using a cutting block right now then you are not using all of your cooking skills. You will be happy with the extra leverage you will have when preparing foods for you recipes.

The counter top was not intended for the chef to cut and prepare food. You counter is for your appliances like your toaster and coffee maker to set on. It was not intended for the chopping of vegetables or meats. You will have the choice to have a block that matches the look of your kitchen. Most you will find are constructed of maple wood.

Some boards are up to five inches thick. But you probably do not need one more than four inches thick unless you plan to cut large sizes of meat. Buy one that fits your height. You want the block conducive to your reach. The better the fit the less strain on your back and arms.

Do not buy one with wheels on the bottom. Some think that it makes it easier to move around the room but in makes for a less safe cutting board. And wood is a more sanitary surface to cut food on than other surfaces.
