There have been studies that have provided interesting information about which countries have the highest alcohol consumption. Contrary to popular belief, the United States is not even in the top ten. However, the actual countries that are the drunkest may be a little surprising. Based on information from a study released by the World Health Organization, here are some details on which countries consume the most alcohol throughout the world.

Start with the United States. It is, of course, not at the bottom rung, but it is nowhere near the top either. In fact, the United States is kind of the middle of the road, coming in 57th in the rankings of the countries with the most alcohol consumption. Canada is in close running with the United States as is Mexico to round off the North American continent.

Just where are the countries with the most alcohol consumption? You may be a little surprised at the answer. It is interesting to note that the top 25 countries are almost completely all European countries. For example, within the top 25 are Spain, Finland, the United Kingdom and Russia. Most people work under the assumption that the most impoverished countries are those with the highest alcohol consumption, but this study shows very much differently as many of the top 25 countries are nowhere near being classified as impoverished.

The countries with the lowest alcohol consumption are mainly on the African continent as well as in the Middle East. As for Asia, the numbers are variant with China, Japan and India coming in on the lower end of the alcohol consumption levels. This is also true of South America, where countries like Brazil rival the levels of the United States while smaller countries have lower or actually vastly higher alcohol consumption levels.

As for Australia, while not quite as high in the rankings as the European countries, it definitely does have one of the higher levels of Alcohol consumption, coming in just below the top 25 mark.

With this new study, some surprising figures have come in about which countries have the highest alcohol consumption. Chances are, you are even a little surprised by some of these results, and they prove that you cannot equate poverty with alcohol consumption since it would seem that poverty levels actually seem to have very little to do with each country’s alcohol consumption levels. To find out more about the alcohol consumption levels of each country, the World Health Organization has published the detailed results on the Internet.
