  When you are looking at conditioning the heart and developing cardiovascular fitness aerobic exercise does a great job. Yes, the same as any muscle the heart can be be made healthier through exercise by raising the heart rate and making it work harder.

Aerobic exercise are on one side of the spectrum and anaerobic workouts on the other. While anaerobics are also effective in enhancing and maintaining cardiovascular health it tends to also produce more damage as the your body grows older. And lots of physical fitness enthusiasts will choose aerobic routines as it tends to be gentler on the body.

Any sort of physical activity that increases the heart rate and can be done continuously (non-stop) for 15-20 minutes or more such as walking, jogging, swimming, biking, etc. Anaerobic exercise is quick 15-30 second all out bursts followed by recovery. When it comes to improving and maintaining cardiovascular health aerobic exercising is the preferred choice of many athletes as it has a tendency to produce less damage. Anaerobic workouts raises the heart rate higher, but aerobic workouts elevates it for a greater amount of time. Both can be a very effective way to have a strong cardiovascular system, basically it´s a matter of preference.

Even though any type of physical activity will help to help to make the the heart stronger and keep the cardio-vascular system working better it´s also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle at the same time and consume the right foods. While your body may be able to manage not being physically fit and feeding on junk foods in your 20´s and 30´s while it´s still young and strong, it might be a different story when you age. When you reach your 50´s and 60´s and your body starts to weaken, after decades of abusing your health and body it may start to catch up with you.

Health and fitness and carrying out some form of physical exercise such as aerobic exercise is great for keeping the 'engine' running strong. However, lots of people discover that adjusting their lifestyle and eating habits go hand in hand with starting some type of health and fitness program.

People often work out with other people or at health clubs to stay motivated. Or, many people would rather workout alone and do it almost religiously and use it as time to be alone in their thoughts or to sort of meditate while while working out. Either way, the main thing is to 'Just Do It'. And anytime you´re feeling un-motivated or having a tough time getting going and starting a workout keep in mind that the work you´re performing today will pay off in spades as you get older.
