Are you a victim of restless nights? Do you experience unending exhaustion? Do you guzzle down caffeine like its water, even though it never seems to be enough? If you fall into any of these categories, you are just one of many who suffer from insomnia.

The CDC recommends 6 to 8 hours of sleep as the necessary amount to keep you healthy both physically and mentally. Unfortunately for us, the CDC doesn’t take into consideration that we may not be able to close our eyes and nod off whenever we tell it to. Even when we are trying to sleep, our brain moves a mile a minute always thinking, never resting. For those of us who are stressed, worried, anxious or even depressed, our mind feels like this even at bedtime.

For the travelers who love a job that caters to those frequent flyer miles, those changes in sleep environments may be inadvertently stressing you into sleep deprivation. Many victims of insomnia feel that they are in control of their environment and do not understand the source to it. On the contrary, our body and our mind have a habit of trying to tell us things we can’t always pick up on.

It might be nice for those who can spend hours, days, or even weeks trying to pinpoint their primary source of insomnia. For most of us, we need our body to be in tiptop shape…yesterday. Our minds are constantly being over-stimulated. If not by electronics and gadgets, then by us constantly multi-tasking ourselves into hysteria. Prescription medications are available by the dozen to act as a sedative, and allow you to go to sleep when you require it. These medications however, work as a tranquilizer, instead of your brain working with your body to get good sleep and feel rested in the morning. The problem with these drugs is while it shuts down your brain, it also shuts down other nerves and muscles that need to be working overnight for you to get the full benefits of sleep.

Fortunately, other options have started to become available. Natural remedies that give your mind a push to get some rest, without the negative side effects. Easy to swallow options have readily become more popular for those who experience problems with most regular over the counter products. In addition to products like easy to swallow melatonin, many vitamins are available that will also help regulate a sleep pattern. Today’s multivitamins and easy to swallow multivitamins possess good amounts of B12 which will give you sustained energy throughout the day, and start shutting down at night, helping to regulate sleep schedules. It is always wise, however, to consult your doctor before adjusting your supplement intake.

For those who are hesitant about taking any kind of supplement to improve insomnia there are many things you can try that may increase your ability to sleep. It may help to regulate sleep patterns on your own. For instance, going to bed and waking up at the same time will eventually act as a natural alarm clock, telling your body when to sleep and when to wake. Yoga and meditation will help stress and anxiety, which may be the leading factor for lack of sleep.

There are many other remedies that you can try to help cure your insomnia. It is best to first understand the source of your problem. The following are a few of the most common causes of insomnia:

• Stress
• Anxiety
• Environment change
• Sleep schedule problems
• Jet lag
• Overly exhausted
• Excessive alcohol or caffeine
• Mental stimulation before bedtime
• Disrupted sleep schedules
• Sleeping area distractions
• Noise
• Extreme temperatures

These are all very common problems attributed to insomnia. Do not think that something is wrong with you personally, because you are more sensitive to these disturbances than others. Every person is different; our minds are one of a kind. Consult with a doctor before taking anything that may affect your physical health as well as your mental health. Resources, like easy to swallow vitamins, is in abundance and ready to adhere to your specific needs. Some things always end up on the back burner, however never let sleep be one of them again. Seek some support to get all the REM you need.
