Want to create perfect, defined curls just like in the salon? Using the right method, you can achieve this easily, and once you have practiced a few times, you will be able to enjoy a head of bouncy beautiful spirals or ringlets. Make sure you have a good quality curling iron before you start! Here are some simple steps for you to follow.

1. First of all, use some heat protectant on your hair to create a buffer between the hot barrel of the curling iron and your hair. To help distribute it thoroughly, untangle your hair with a wide-tooth comb after applying the protectant. Make sure your hair is completely dry before using the curling iron. Divide your locks into various 1 inch sections, starting at the front. Wrap the section around the barrel and if your curling iron is a clipless one, hold it as close to the root as possible, and wait 10 seconds before releasing.

2. If you don’t own a clipless curling iron and you are using a conventional spring curling iron, clamp the ends of the section and roll the barrel up towards the scalp and hold it there for 10 seconds. Roll the curling iron down until the hair no longer holds the clip closed. Repeat this with other sections of your hair.

3. You can choose to alternate the direction of each curl along with the thickness in order to create a more natural result. You can also use curling speed to determine the consistency of the curl, curling slower for springy curls, or faster for loose curls or waves. If you want, you can pin up the fresh curls with a bobby pin to keep the curl in place and make it hold its shape for longer. This is of course, optional, but those with hair that holds curls with some difficulty can benefit from trying this out.

4. Curl all the sections of your hair until you have achieved your desired style. Use a blow dryer on a low setting or your fingers to gently break up the curls and tousle them to make the style appear more natural. Avoid touching the curls to much as this can produce frizz. Finish off with some light holding spray or shine spray to set the style and keep the curls bouncy for longer.

Once you have dominated this technique, you can continue on to experiment with different types of curls. Enjoy!
