| Carotid angioplasty is a medical procedure that can reduce
the chances of experiencing a stroke. This treatment is
generally done to widen the passageway of blood in the neck.
This method will give more confidence to the patient that
the signs of a stroke is minimized, therefore, preventing
the event of permanent paralysis, or even sudden death. Carotid angioplasty is generally done if there is obstruction in the carotid artery. This blood vessel is found within the neck, carrying blood and oxygen to the brain to allow normal functioning. However, when plaque, an accumulation of fatty substances and harmful materials within the walls of an artery, builds up in blood vessel, less blood and oxygen is delivered to the brain, which then leads to a stroke. Carotid angioplasty involves the use of a tiny, long tube called a catheter that is introduced through the skin and is then directed to the carotid artery. The carotid artery is composed of two parts: external and internal. Both these two are checked of possible plaque obstruction by an endoscope that follows through the catheter. When the tip of the catheter reaches the neck area, the surgeon injects a contrasting material called ‘dye’ that gives a wide view of the carotid artery. The image is then projected to the X-ray monitor and the surgeon determines where to place the end of the catheter. Before the doctor performs carotid angioplasty, local anesthesia is given to the patient. This mild anesthetic makes the patient become numb during the procedure, but is conscious enough to voice out any discomforts that is experienced. This makes the doctor adjust immediately to unexpected errors during carotid angioplasty, which is advantageous than general anesthesia, as every second may be critical. In carotid angioplasty, a small, deflated balloon is placed at the end of the catheter. This is positioned on the plaque and is then inflated. The plaque contains a mixture of soft and hard substances. When the balloon is inflated, the plaque slowly flattens. Although the procedure does not completely clear out the passageway of the blood, it improves greatly the flow of blood through the carotid artery. In some cases, a stent, a small tube-like device, is placed on the plaque to prevent further accumulation of plaque-building material. Carotid angioplasty makes an excellent treatment and preventive measure to a stroke. Before undergoing this procedure, you should ask about the complications and important things to consider to your doctor. You should also keep in mind what things to do and not to do after the treatment. Carotid angioplasty will not only give you a peace of mind, it will also give you more time to spend in your life.
