People today are more fitness conscious and take greater steps to stay in shape. Exercises are designed to help tone different muscle groups and provide better circulation for the internal organs. People interested in starting a new exercise routine should look at their physical condition to decide which exercises to incorporate into their routine. People who want to get a flat stomach should look for exercises that target the abdominal muscles.

Among the different exercises designed to work the abdominal muscles are sit ups. Most people are aware of how to perform sit ups, but do not like the strain it places on their lower back. To help alleviate the strain, there are a number of products available to help people perform sit ups without stress. The large inflatable balls are used for this exercise. The flexibility of the ball´s surface reduces the amount of strain placed on the lower back. These balls are available at most department stores and are frequently used in fitness centers.

To get a flat stomach, people can also use an incline bench. This is a shorter bench than what is used for bench pressing larger weights. The way this item is designed places emphasis on the target muscles of the stomach area. This bench has a seat covered with padding and a flexible material. The incline is an additional board area placed at an angle to the seat so the person can bend backwards toward the inclined section.

People who are not interested in performing any type of sit up exercise can also get a toned stomach area through leg lift exercises. The key to working the abdominal muscles through leg lifts is to make sure the small area of the back remains flat on the ground during the up and down movement of the legs. Weak stomach muscles will have a tendency to pull on the lower back muscles, causing this area to rise when the legs are raised and lowered.

To help keep the back against the floor, people can place a rolled up towel underneath their buttocks to shift the curve of the lower back. A small pillow or cushion will also work to change the angle of the lower back when placed under the buttocks.

The curvature of the spine can play a role in the definition of the lower belly region. People trying to get a flat stomach who have a lower spine curve that sweeps inward, might have a harder time toning the lower belly region. To help compensate for this curve, people should always stand erect with their buttocks tucked in when walking, to help engage those lower muscles.
