| What is cross training? It's doing a variety of workout
disciplines either over one workout or over the course of
several of your workouts. More specifically, aerobic, weight lifting, and stretching exercise - either in the same workout or over the course of several weeks. For example, a cross training workout might be include: Workout: 30 minutes on an elliptical, 15 minutes resistance training, and 25 minutes stretching. Another way to do cross training is splitting up the disciplines over the course of several workouts - an example would look like as follows: Day 1: 40 minute jog. Day 2: 35 minutes of weight training and 25 minutes of core exercises. Day 3: 30 minutes on an exercise bike and 30 minutes stretching. Day 4: 45 minutes of rowing, followed by a 25 minute stretch. Benefits of cross training: 1. Get some variety in your workouts. Doing the same workout over and over gets stale. 2. Great fitness and conditioning is the result of doing a variety of workouts. You don't have to spend the same amount of time in each area (i.e. cardio, weight training, and stretching), but it's good to do some of each over the course of your workout regimen. 3. Reduce the chance of over training because you can rest one area after doing a workout, but still get a workout in by doing different exercises. For example, if you run 1 hour one day, you don't necessarily want to run 1 hour the next day. However, the next day you could do a weight training workout. 4. The complementary skills you get from the different disciplines can help improve your performance and conditioning in your primary workout discipline. If you're a swimmer, resistance training and stretching can help your swimming performance. Get creative with cross training. You can mix up a particular discipline as well. For example, if you're a swimmer, you can do long distance swimming one day and then do sprints another day. Cross training is a fun way to workout - that's the biggest benefit for me. The fact it can improve your primary discipline or all other workouts, that's a huge bonus. |
