Tips for Repairing a Damaging Hose

My Daddy is still using that old garden hose which my grandfather bought long back in seventies. Not only the garden hose, there are some other garden tools he is still using also. I’m really surprised to how he maintains those garden tools! May be he knows the best ways of extending the life of his garden tools. This has really inspired me to take care of my garden tools more than ever I could have. Whether it’s protecting your hose from hazardous conditions or repairing, you need to know some basic stuff for this.

It has been observed that there are two main problems that occur:

1. Cracking and/or splitting of the tube or conduit; and
2. Kinking of water/cylinder.

You can easily repair this damage without any further hassle of using exclusive joiners into your garden watering habit.

Garden tools like garden hose is one of the significant garden tools that you use, frequently. This is obvious to find hoses as mostly abused garden tool. Usual problems are leaks, kinks and bent end fittings. But there is nothing to be unhappy about this. Fortunately, good quality branded hoses can be repaired for use during next summer. To meet the common you may need some locally available repairing products: Duct Tape, Garden Hoses, Garden Shears, Hose Attachment, Hose Repair Fitting, Mild Liquid Soap, Permanent Markers, Duct Tape, and Permanent markers.

Thread a gun-type nozzle onto the end of the leaking hose. Switch on the hose to check the punch or leak. Now switch off the hose, take away the nozzle and spot the leak with black tape or a marker. If you have a hose repair kit, it’s fine. If you don’t have, then go to your nearest garden tools shop or hardware store and buy one hose repairing kit for yourself. Such investment is not waste of money as you can use this for each time you repair your hose. Repair kits help you cutting any damaged section out of the hose and reattach the two pieces with a new jointer. Cut off the leaky part of the hose with the help of your garden shears. If you find the punch in the centre of the hose, cut an inch or two on either side of the leak. Soak the cut end in hot, soapy water. The hot water helps the rubber expanding and softening, and making it easier to slip the repair fitting inside the hose. Clamp the plastic pieces on either side of the hose and screw them in place tightly so that water won’t come out through the loosening parts.

You can get brass repair fittings from hardware stores that press into place with a flange. There are also three part plastic fittings which can be held in place with screws. Repair kits are available in both brass and plastic for male and female end fittings and also for repairing midhose leaks. For a pinhole leak, duct tape might work temporarily, but this is not a long term solution. If water still comes out of punch of the repaired hose, replace the washer immediately. Make sure the hose is threaded onto the faucet tightly to protect it being getting wet. If a hose cannot be repaired due to heavy damage, you may cut it into pieces and use for tree ties instead of throwing this into bin.
