Carpet cleaning may seem like a simple job. Most of us just grab the vacuum cleaner and run it over the carpet on a regular basis. However, while a vacuum cleaner is great at picking up dust and lint, it is not as efficient at picking up ground in dirt, spills, or grease. After a big party, for instance, you might find that the job is bigger than you expected.

For those types of jobs, a heavier duty solution is required. There are actually 4 different methods that can work well for those occasions when a more thorough cleaning is required. You can either do the job yourself, or better yet, hire a professional to do it for you.

Carpet Shampooing

Shampoo cleaning is the most economical method of carpet cleaning. The shampoo is applied on the carpet to attract dirt and then left to dry. Once the shampoo dries, it separates itself from the carpet fibers. Lastly, you vacuum the carpet to collect the materials that dried together with the shampoo. If you decide to use a carpet shampoo, then you must take precautions because many carpet shampoos have detergents that can damage your carpet. Be sure to do some research on your carpeting before you decide to use shampoo.

Steam Cleaning

Another cleaning method is steam cleaning. It is also called the hot water extraction method. This process involves using hot water rather than steam to clean the carpet. The hot water is sprayed on the carpet at high pressure to remove dust particles and fungus. Its effectiveness makes it one of the most popular cleaning methods.

Dry Powder Method

Another method you might want to try is the dry powder method. In this method, you do not use any water to clean your carpet. Instead, you use a powder which is an absorbent material made of solvent, detergent and small amounts of water. With this method, the powder is sprinkled over the carpet using a rotating machine and later vacuumed up. This is the method most recommended by dry cleaners.

Foam Cleaning

Another method you can use to clean your carpet is foam cleaning. With this method, you make use of foam, which is applied using a rotating machine. You can use this method together with the steam cleaning method mentioned above. The process involves spreading the shampoo to form foam. Leave it for about an hour to dry, and then vacuum clean it to remove the foam. This is one of the simplest methods that you can do by yourself.

These are the most common carpet cleaning methods. However, it is important to identify the kind of carpet you have and then choose the appropriate method to clean it. For the best quality cleaning, you should seek the services of a professional.
