If you're looking for a type of siding that will give your home a facelift and require virtually no maintenance, then vinyl is a viable option for you. While it offers many of the same benefits that varieties have, its price tag is significantly lower.

What is it?

While many of us are familiar with the use of this material to produce an array of products, what exactly is it? Also called "fake" leather, it's a type plastic resin constructed from ethylene and chlorine. If you want to impress your friends and relatives, tell them that the plastic resin's name actually originates from its full scientific name: polyvinylchloride (PVC). Companies use the material for a variety of products, due its low cost and being child-safe.

What are the benefits?

1. Environment-friendly

If you're concerned about how your home improvements will impact the environment, then this material is an outstanding option. Fewer resources are needed to both manufacture and maintain this type of siding. Also, it's also recyclable, so you won't be creating a lot of unwanted waste when you eventually remove it.

2. Rigidity

This is another key benefit of having vinyl on the sides of your home. Wood chips and aluminum dents. But you won't have those problems with this plastic resin. After installing it to the sides of your house, it will retain its shape even after a baseball or other object strikes it.

3. Price

It's actually the most popular manmade material for sides of houses, greatly due to its cost. In fact, you'll typically spend 25%-50% less than you would when buying wood or aluminum varieties. Who doesn't like to save money, right?

4. Maintenance

Basically, you'll just need to occasionally wash vinyl on the sides of your home. And the only equipment you'll need is a hose and some mild detergent! And the water won't damage the downspouts or gutters. Also, unlike other types, it won't crack, rot, or rust, like metals and wood do.

Differing from materials, there's also no need to paint PVC. That's because the color is mixed throughout the entire material. On the other hand, once aluminum or wood siding gets scratched, the surface of the material becomes damaged. And if you've ever needed to paint the side of a house, then you know that it's something to be avoided.

What are the drawbacks?

1. Resilience

This is certainly the biggest drawback of using this plastic resin on the sides of your home. It becomes somewhat brittle during wintertime, unlike other varieties such as aluminum. Also, the plastic resin tends to expand and contract more than other materials. While you should consider the pros and cons of any type of siding, this is a fairly minor one. Consider the alternatives: do you want to deal with termites nibbling at a wood variety, or deal with dents in the aluminum variety?

When choosing siding for your house, vinyl is certainly worth considering. The number of benefits it provides can save you time, effort, and money. And in today's world, those things tend to be in short supply.
