| I was recently interviewed by Inc. Magazine about the topic
of effective subject lines and it got me thinking about how
subject lines affect your email campaigns. Writing an
effective subject line is the starting point for all great
email campaigns. Not putting effort into writing effective subject lines will prevent your email campaign from getting the best return possible. It means many readers won´t be enticed into reading your emails and taking the action you want them to. Follow these three pointers to create effective email subject lines. 1. Match subject line with From address. A subject line all by itself isn´t the answer. Take a close look at who you send your email from. The exact same subject line can arrive in your inbox; one from a funny- looking, unfamiliar From address and one from a trusted friend. You probably won´t open the email from the stranger. You may open the email from a trusted friend. 2. Write a subject line no longer than 45 characters. Sometimes a simple thing can be the challenge to getting an email read. Many people have limited space on their screens to read a long subject line. Generally speaking the shorter a subject line, the more effective it can be because your reader will see the entire text. Long subject lines will be cut off. 3. Write convincing copy in your subject line. Your reader is usually focused on one thing. WIIFM. That means What´s In It For Me? They are thinking of themselves...and so should you. Write a subject line which tells someone why they should read your email and you´ll be better than 99% of your competitors. Do not be tricky or misleading or too clever. Humor, double meanings and outright lies work against your goal of getting your email opened. Nothing happens until your reader has opened your email to hear what you have to say. |
