| Although the recordings of binaural beats has only been
obtainable through new technology, the power of binaural
beats has been known throughout the centuries. Ancient
cultures have known about the benefits and power of binaural
beats centuries before modern science has recognized
them. Of course these cultures throughout time did not name them binaural beats nor did they know what they were. All they knew was that steady rhythmic sound causes extremely powerful healing and spiritual effects. Scientist Melinda Maxfield, PhD, did studies on the drum beats used in the rituals of these different civilizations and found that they beat at a consistent rate of 4.5 beats per second. This consistent beat creates a trance-like state to its listeners. This is a result of the brain shifting into a 4.5-beats-per-second brainwave frequency, also known as a low Theta brainwave frequency. In almost every civilization throughout history, binaural beats have played an important part of the healing and spiritual development of man. With the use of repetitive beats and chanting, the Tibetan monks, Native American shamans, Hindu healers, and mastered Yogis have been able to cause ranges of brainwave frequencies for transcending consciousness, healing and spiritual development. It wasn't until 1839, when Heinrich Wilhelm Dove found binaural beats, that science had eventually found out about them. And even though scientific research still continued, binaural beats remained a sort of mystery for the next century. In 1973, Gerald Oster put together the numerous binaural beat studies since Dove and wrote a paper called, "Auditory Beats in the Brain". In his research paper, Oster offered tremendous fresh insight and new laboratory discoveries to study on binaural beats. Oster believed binaural beats to be a great tool for neurological and cognitive studies. He believed binaural beats could answer questions such as how animals were able to locate sounds in their three-dimensional environment and the great ability of animals to focus on certain sounds with lots of other noises around them. He also believed binaural beats were an extraordinary tool for treating medical problems. Not only auditory problems but also for more general neurological problems. Binaural beats and consciousness were first studied by Robert Monroe who tried to reproduce a subjective impression of 4Hz oscillation that he associated with out-of-body experiences. From the evidence of his findings, Monroe created the binaural beat self-development industry by forming The Monroe Institute, now a non-profit binaural beat research and education organization. From this time, binaural beats have been extensively researched and scientists know more about our brainwave states and how they are affected by binaural beats. With this new research and technology, we have been able to create the powerful binaural beats that are known today. |
