The Perks And Limitations Of Your Inpatients Substance Abuse Program

If you’re suffering from any substance abuse and you’re admitting yourself into an inpatient substance abuse program, good for you. At least you’re already a step closer to getting better. Making that decision is a vital step towards recovery. However, you need to understand that not all of these programs are made the same, and an inpatient substance abuse program is only one part of rehabilitation.

An inpatient substance abuse program is the first phase of the whole rehabilitation package, and it usually involves detox, counseling and recreational sessions. These would help wean you from your addiction so you can rediscover the beauty of life. More importantly, though, an inpatient substance abuse program removes you from your environment and protects you from certain elements in it which may be triggering your addiction.

In other words, it transfers you to a controlled space so your treatment can be carried out more smoothly. Most people mistake their inpatient substance abuse program as the end-all of their addiction problems. However, the truth is that it’s only part of the treatment, and if you think you’ll be instantly better after your inpatient substance abuse program, you may be setting yourself up for a lot of disappointments.

After your inpatient substance abuse program, you’ll be reintroduced to your old environment again. You’ll also be put under outpatient programs, which basically means you’ll be under the care of your family, and you’ll be asked to attend regular peer counseling sessions just to reinforce your resolve. You’ll soon realize that things were easier while you were in your inpatient substance abuse program because the inpatient set-up was ideal for recovery. Now that you’re back in your old environment, you’ll be facing a lot of temptations which could drag you back to your addiction. You’ll have to be stronger as an outpatient, and you will have to draw this strength from your family and your peers at the group sessions.

If you feel like you’re faltering once you’re out of your inpatient substance abuse program, just fight the temptation to crumble. You should take note that most relapses happen during this stage of the rehab and it really is the most challenging phase of all. The key is for you never to let yourself cave in and to think about all the lessons you’ve learned during your inpatient substance abuse program so you can feel stronger. If your inpatient substance abuse program has enough foresight, they would have had counseling sessions to arm your family for your outpatient phase. You should look for an inpatient substance abuse program that values the involvement of your family because the counseling sessions and the family orientation meetings would certainly come in handy once you’re out of the rehab center.
