| The young people, who want to start life away from their
parents' homes, are always in a quandary on how to go about
it economically and therefore most of them always go for the
shared accommodation as part of a solution to this problem.
They end up sharing with former classmates or friends
without bothering to find out how tidy these people are as
regards housekeeping. Cleanliness and proper hygiene should be the first priority. It is important that everyone involved be very conversant with the basic rules of hygiene plus what makes for good hygienic behavior as regards cleanliness. A person who cannot keep the house tidy should in fact be forced to confine his untidy nature to his own quarters. Trouble is when you have some common rooms to share like the kitchen, living room and even the washrooms. Insist that any dirt in the kitchen and washrooms should be removed in less than 48 hours. It is very important particularly if the dirt is pertaining to raw animal protein or blocked sewer from the bathrooms. It is good to make a duty roster that can help to give each person some work to do to avoid any disagreements and ill feelings with other housemates. Not everyone who shares the living quarters with others would be having any idea about how to keep cleanliness. It is always very difficult to share housing with other people who are not your own family members. It would force you to keep adjusting your own behavior to suit them. You will see that even matters that demand common courtesy like turning down the sound of music in the late hours of the night becomes a problem. All it means is that some people have no qualms about borrowing another person's cooking utensils without prior permission. Agreed, it is not very easy to broach this kind of discussion between housemates, but doing it with the view to demarcating some limits of behavior, personal space and privacy can protect one from future regrets. Again, all of you must sit down and discuss how to use the money, not only that but also discuss every topic that concerns everyone. Discuss the expenses that are joint, who will do the grocery shopping, go pay rent and bills for utilities and so forth. People should not postpone such discussions. Duties and responsibilities when shared; must be followed up to prove that payments were made and purchases done. |
