Flanking this symbol arc cornucopias overflowing with tropical fruits and golden coins. In the lowest section of the shield the Isthmus of Panama is depicted, with two full-rigged sailing vessels, one on the Pacific Ocean and the other on the Caribbean Sea. In the oval shield of Ecuador we see Mount Chimborazo, ''Mountain of Snow," one of the highest peaks of the Andes. Nowhere in the Andean system do the individual mountains attain so magnificent a development as in Ecuador. Chimborazo is considered to have been volcanic at one time. Its summit rises more than 20.000 feet. Above the mountain the designer of the shield has introduced the sun and four signs of the zodiac—Aries, Taurus, Gemini and Cancer, corresponding to the months of March, April, May and June, all memorable in the history of Ecuador. Surrounding the shield are banners and sprays of palm and laurel.

Palm and laurel branches, indicative of victory and honor, ale seen on several national emblems of South America. Two intertwined laurel branches, representing fraternity and union, surround the ellipse of the shield of Argentina, while the sun, emblem of power, rises above. The coat of arms of Uruguay is similar in design, with a crest formed by the golden sun, and with the oval surrounded by two olive branches. The shield is divided into four quarters, the lower sections picturing a horse running free, symbol of liberty; an ox. symbolic of plenty. In the upper sections are a pair of scales for equality and justice, and the mountain of Montevideo, symbol of power.

Venezuela has a coat of arms rich in Nature's symbolism. Two horns of plenty are overflowing with the fruits of the land. A bundle of wheat stalks indicates unity and fertility of the soil. The untamed white horse symbolizes liberty. Surrounding the shield are palm and laurel branches. Paraguay chose a seal circular in shape, showing a body of water with blue sky above and a five-pointed red star. Surrounding the circle arc palm and olive branches tied together with a red, white and blue ribbon. The riches of Peru in the three natural kingdoms are symbolized on its coat of arms. The llama, which resembles a small camel minus the hump, is the principal carrier of burdens along the mountain trails.

The bark of the cinchona tree, native to Peru, is the source of the quinine of commerce. A cornucopia overflowing with golden coins indicates the mineral wealth. Above the shield is a laurel wreath, with branches of palm and laurel on either side.
