| Is Brans Castle the real Vlad Dracula Castle? As you surely
know, the former Prince of Walachia in XV century, Vlad
Dracula Impaler is one of the most mysterious, controversial
and charming historical characters in the world. As we all
know, there are many legends and debated subjects regarding
his real life (1431-1476). In the spite he was the preferred
character for many writers, film directors, journalists,
etc, there are rarely thorough references to his real life
as it really happened! Or worse, they are often distorted!
For this reason, many people in the world have limited or
wrong information about real Vlad, the Dracula. And to
everything bound to him! One of the matters around the life
of Prince Vlad, is that of ' Vlad Dracula Castle'. Every
Dracula passionate knows that Vlad Dracula Castle is the
famous Bran Castle, in Southern Transylvania. But is this
true? Brans Castle is situated in the wonderful landscape of Bran Gorges between Piatra Craiului and Bucegi mountains. It is one of the most valuable monuments of medieval architecture from Romania, put in a strong connection with the personality of Vlad Dracula Impaler! Even if in Romania there are many interesting historical monuments to visit, Brans Castle is maybe the most visited by the foreign tourists, due to the Dracula stories that run around. The foreign tourists first called Brans Castle as “Vlad Dracula Castle” in the years of 70´s, as they discovered to this entrance in Bran Transylvania, an impressive medieval castle that seemed like that one from the Dracula novel of Bram Stoker. Visiting the castle´s rooms and court, the tourist´s imagination had spread out, considering that here must be the place where the character vampire Dracula haunted and tortured his victims. So that, it received the name 'Vlad Dracula Castle' or more, 'house of Dracula'! Admiring the greatness of the castle and knowing of course the legend of Dracula, the question that often pierces the mind of every visitor is: Which is the real connection between Vlad Dracula Impaler and Brans Castle? Well my friend, the truth is this connection it´s very weak, almost inexistent for real! In the spite of tourist´s opinions, this is historically proved! You have to know that during his reigns - as all the Walachian rulers - Vlad the Dracula, made important contributions to building, rebuilding or consolidating many churches, monasteries or fortresses in his country. Not the same happened with Brans Castle! It is true that during his life, Vlad Dracula Impaler often used the route of Bran Gorges for his inroads in order to punish the saxon merchandisers from Brasov region, or to simply pass in Transylvania where he had multiples relationships. But that´s all; he never possessed or lived to Brans Castle, for one day long! The only real connection between Vlad the Dracula and Bran Transylvania is that after his arrestment in November 1462, in Piatra Craiului Mountains, he has been led directly inside it. Prince Vlad lived here for two month, before being brought to Visegrad town, where he will be imprisoned for 14 years! Petrus de Thomasis, the venetian ambassador to Buda that age (present Budapest, Hungary), mentioned this fact in his chronicles. Otherwise, there is no other historical fact to prove that the Walachian prince had anything in common with this castle! But where is the so called 'castle of Dracula'? Well, the only site in Romania that is considered Vlad Dracula Castle a lonely fortress, situated in the Northern part of Walachia. But about this, please read in my next article.
